Aberdeen High School Launches “Adulting 101” Series with Hands-On Vehicle Maintenance Session

Aberdeen High School kicked off its new Adulting 101 series this week with an engaging and practical session focused on Vehicle Maintenance, attended by 36 students. The Adulting 101 series offers short, after-school sessions that teach real-world life skills. Students attend voluntarily, and the program also serves as a restorative practice option in lieu of after-school detention.

Under the guidance of Mr. Webster, Mr. Carter, Mr. Lewis, and Mr. Brown, students were divided into four rotating groups to gain hands-on experience in essential car care and safety practices.

Participants learned to:

  • Pop and open the hood of a vehicle

  • Identify the locations of engine oil, windshield washer fluid, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, battery, and air filter

  • Measure tire pressure and inflate a tire

  • Check tread depth

  • Pull and read the oil dipstick

  • Refill windshield washer fluid using a funnel

  • Watch a live demonstration on how to jump a dead battery

  • Safely attach jumper cables to a demonstration battery

  • Identify key elements of an emergency roadside kit

  • Locate important vehicle information on the inside of a car door

Students were highly engaged throughout the session—many asked thoughtful questions, and some even took notes as they rotated through the learning stations.

“Providing students with opportunities to develop real-world skills like these helps build confidence and independence,” said Mrs. Harris. “Our goal is to make learning meaningful beyond the classroom.”

The Adulting 101 series will continue throughout the school year, covering a variety of essential life skills designed to help students prepare for life after graduation.  Mr. Kyle Brown is the lead teacher, facilitator and primary instructor of the Adulting 101 series.

AHS Hosts First Annual Trunk or Treat & Spooky Walk: A Community-Wide Success

ABERDEEN, MD — October 30, 2025 — Aberdeen High School’s Student Government Association (SGA) hosted its first-ever Trunk or Treat and Spooky Walk on Wednesday, October 29th, transforming the AHS campus into a festive Halloween destination for families across the Aberdeen community.

Families from AHS feeder schools — Bakerfield, Halls Cross Roads, G.D. Lisby, Church Creek, Roye-Williams, and Swan Creek Elementary — were invited to join in the fun. Visitors enjoyed walking along a spooky path filled with spider webs, Halloween inflatables, fog, lights, and eerie music, creating a memorable and family-friendly Halloween experience.

The event featured over 50 decorated trunks, sponsored by local community members, parents, teachers from all of the Aberdeen feeder system, HCPS partners, and MANY AHS sports teams and student organizations. More than 1,000 attendees came out to celebrate, making this inaugural event an overwhelming success.

Adding to the excitement, five food trucks offered delicious treats, and a Jurassic Park exhibit from Horne Concrete Construction LLC delighted guests of all ages. Donations collected throughout the evening supported the AHS Junior Class of 2027, raising nearly $500 toward future class activities.

“We are so grateful for the incredible support from the greater Aberdeen community,” said Mrs. Erica Harris, AHS Principal. “This event was truly a team effort, and we hope it’s just the beginning of many more community events that bring families together.”

AHS extends heartfelt thanks to all volunteers, sponsors, staff, and families who made this event possible and looks forward to continuing this new Aberdeen tradition in years to come
